Successes

  • Increased funding and committed guidance has resulted in superior services.
  • Suicide rates have dropped to their lowest level since 1861 when records began.
  • The national patient surveys conducted by the Healthcare Commission show that 77% of patients describe their care as good, very good, or excellent. 90% said that they felt staff treated them with respect and dignity.
  • These statistics of increased satisfaction have continued for the last few years demonstrating that as far as patients are concerned they are seeing an improvement.
  • The Healthcare Commission found in its last report that improvements have been made specifically in the area of child and adolescent mental health care;
  • And that of all the types of NHS Trust Mental Health Trusts were found in the latest Healthcare Commission report to be the most improved type of Trust.
  • In August 2008 the Healthcare Commission published results showing that young people with learning disabilities were treated by extremely competent and caring staff and that they felt they were treated with dignity and respect. They were also a group who were strongly consulted on their care.
  • Dr Matt Muijen, the WHO head of mental health in Europe, has stated that England has the best mental health service in Europe and that this is recognised in every European country other than England.
